( Okay, but he does watch what Lan Zhan does as he rinses vegetables, perhaps for a second time, before setting to the cutting. Wei Wuxian is good with a knife, in various ways, and makes quick work after checking what form Lan Zhan wants the vegetables to end up in. )
To remove moisture so the tofu will keep its shape when we cut it and put it in the dish.
[Wei Ying, do you just buy supermarket tofu and just slap it in the pan however it comes, right out of the package?
... of course you do.]
It needs to sit for about thirty minutes. We can finish preparing the vegetables and the rest of it while it does.
[The rice will be done by then and can go in the wok with the kimchi after Wangji has separated a bowl for himself. He'll also grill some of the tofu in sesame oil separately for himself and the rest will go in the Kimchi fried rice.]
( Wei Wuxian definitely just slices, dices, and throws in a pan, what the heck is this pressing liquid out business? If it holds together enough to be eaten it's fine? Also how often does he even buy tofu. Unrepentant carnivore over here.
Also, it's just not what he's needed to learn. )
Ooooh, so that's how that works...
( The thing is he doesn't even fail to know this from a perspective of a spoiled young master. He just flat out never knew even when he's been making mouth-burning food and subsisted on nothing he mentions and has by now all forgotten in his older childhood years.
He gets back to chopping after the mystery of the tofu pressing is explained, only pausing to quirk up his eyebrows at the egg question. )
Probably? I got a thing of them last week.
( There are eggs... shoved into the cheese drawer. Don't ask. Wei Wuxian won't remember why he did that. )
Eggs from a week ago are good enough for omelette, so that's fine.
And it probably says enough about how often Wangji cooks for Wei Ying that even though he's only been living here for a few weeks, Wangji is already moving through the kitchen finding what he needs without needing to be told where things are.
Eggs are cracked in a bowl and whisked, soy sauce and fish stock added for flavor and then some of the mushroom slices Wei Ying just finished, salt and pepper and in the pan it goes on low heat to start cooking.
And then it's making a sweet vinegar marinade for some of the side vegetables, and then putting the rest of them in another pan to sauté with sesame oil. As always, Wangji is ruthlessly efficient and economical in his movements, checking on his various pans without fail.]
( Watching Lan Zhan at work in any capacity is always a treat, and usually fascinating. He's handsome, beautiful, all the words that cross gender divides repeatedly, just as he is, but when he concentrates, when he's moving around like this, juggling so much at once...
... Wei Wuxian thinks it's very amazing! He claps his hands, keeping back out of the way once the vegetable chopping efforts have ended. )
Wow, Lan Zhan! So efficient!
( Ignoring the nostalgic bubble of familiarity it has for him, memories of watching his sister in the kitchen making what she did: soups in particular. )
Set one bowl of rice aside for me wen it's done, please.
[So he can just dump the rest directly in the wok, but for now... well, with the vegetables diced, the omelette cooking and the side dishes marinating, there isn't enough work for four hands.
And Wei Ying hasn't really said what the occasion is for having Wangji over on a day when he is not drunk and in need of a pick up, and for buying him a gift.]
( Wei Wuxian will continue not to say, because it doesn't occur to him to explain he just wanted to hang out, for once, and the gift is... see, it's living, and it's not cut flowers, so it won't wilt, and that's a nicer gift, right? Why he purchased a gift, even he's not sure. It felt right.
That said, when the rice comes done, he scoops out an overgenerous bowl for Lan Zhan because of course he does, then looks over Lan Zhan's way: )
You want the rest of it there?
( Asks the man holding the metal insert with his multicoloured knitted pot holders. )
Just leave it on the counter. You can cube the tofu now.
[He sets out a smaller pan to start some of the vegetables for himself with just sesame oil, a bit of cooking wine and a dash of soy sauce.
The other vegetables in the wok are looking good, so he goes and adds about half of the container of kimchi to that, and then the rice. After that, it's about ten minutes of intense stirring, until the tofu is ready and he divides it between the two dishes and stirs some more.]
You should have enough for two or three days.
[So you won't need to feed yourself with weird supermarket instant food for a little while. Hopefully.]
( He blinks, shrugs, and sets the pot on one of his multicoloured knitted pot holders, before heading back to the pressed tofu and collecting one of the best treated tools in his kitchen: the knives. Cubing takes a moment of considering angles, and then he sets to with precision, every slice as intended. If cooking were only about knife cuts, he'd be a fantastic chef. As it is...
... Anyway, he cooks decently for himself, and at present, no other living human. He also rarely bothers cooking much for himself, hence the present situation.
Which is a situation. He's aware enough to realise that unlike near every other time they've spent time together, this was not prompted based on him calling when needing a pick-up after drinking, making some comment about being hungry, or... honestly what myriad of ways hasn't ended up with them hanging out at one time or another?
Either way, at loose ends, he wanders back and snatches a helping of kimchi from the open tupperware after Lan Zhan's tossed some into the wok, scampering back out of the way again. )
Two days.
( He says, absolutely certain. He enjoys Lan Zhan's cooking, and it reminds him to have an appetite, so at least his dinners will be covered. He's more likely to pick up steamed buns in the morning, and lunch, hah, depends on the day. But dinners are covered! )
Lan Zhan treats me so well!
( That said, he's on to... rechecking the table he set up while Lan Zhan was cooking, because staring at Lan Zhan the whole time was feeling just slightly awkward. Only he's already set the table, so what should he do?
... He retrieves the potted plant and sets it on the table as a centrepiece.
... It is now preventing the two settings from seeing each other.
... He's still trying to figure out where to shove the now dastardly potted plant while Lan Zhan's finishing up his own food in the kitchen. )
[Wei Ying is good with a blade, and the rare few times they've cooked together like this, entrusting him with cutting things is always a sure way to keep him occupy and have great looking vegetables, meat cuts and the likes.
The rice goes into the wok, the whole container left and the smaller bowl in the small pan for himself, and then the tofu.
By the time he is done and he has filled the bowls and he is ready to bring them to the table, there is Wei Ying, staring at the plant that for some reason he just stuck in the middle of the table.]
.... Isn't it going to be in the way?
[It's not that he minds, really, an plants on a table are not exactly out there, but during a meal is a little... surprising?]
It's so strange watching this for almost the first time. Wangji can't remember Wei Ying ever being nervous at him. Annoying, in his face, shameless, yes. Nervous? This is new. As is the fact that Wangji was invited here for no particular reason and that there was a gift waiting for him.
Wei Ying has been acting weird and little erratic and like he is going to vibrate out of his skin. So far, Wangji has decided to just... go with the flow and pretend he doesn't see it. So he just calls out.]
( He answers with some general sound of acknowledgement, before staring at himself in the bathroom mirror mouthing what the hell, the plant needs watering?! Then, because he's already there, he eyes the sink, which won't fit the plant. There's no way. The pot's too tall, and so he looks... toward the shower. And tub. Sighing, he sets the plant on the tile and sets to watering it with the showerhead while wondering how much water it takes to drown healthy roots, and if one day is enough for him to manage it.
(Probably not. He chooses to be optimistic.)
He zones out just enough to overflow the pot, slamming a hand down to stop the flow to the showerhead, then dancing backward with a muttered curse. He's manage to get soiled water across his knees and upper lap, which leads to the next brilliant thought: he can't go back out there wearing this. Only in the process of hurriedly trying to wriggle out of pants, he slips on the water that splashed across the tiles, landing with a startled yelp on his back that only lasts a brief second as the air is subsequently forced out of his lungs, and his head thunks back with a dull thud. Thus Wei Wuxian is temporarily dazed, one leg out of his wet pants, the other one half in, arms splayed, and staring up at the bathroom ceiling.
... What is his life, today? )
I'm. Fine.
( This wheezed, not loud enough for anyone to hear unless they're in the same room. )
[The noise form the showerhead went on for a while, but that wasn't too concerning. The yelp and bang that followed, though? Definitely. And Wangji hurries to the bathroom in alarm to find... pandemonium.
Somehow he should not be surprised that the moment he takes his eyes off Wei Ying, some sort of chaos happens, and yet it still manages to surprise him every time.
Finding him flat on his back, half -dazed - and half undressed??? - is definitely cause for concern, and he comes in quickly to kneel by his side.]
( He repeats what he last wheezes, drumming up a very sheepish smile and waving his hand at Lan Zhan before letting his arm flop down across his chest.
If he were looking at how he's trying to, for no necessary reason, impress Lan Zhan, and is thus managing to bungle all of it because he's overthinking things because he's thinking about them in a different way, he might laugh at himself. In fact he does sort of attempt a laugh, but it comes out as an even sadder wheeze.
Meanwhile, there's the plant. There's the water across the tiles. There's his wet pants, and to a lesser extent, wet boxer briefs.
[Pretty hard, from what he heard, too. But Wei Ying is conscious and speaking, so that's good, and Wangji passes a hand over his face and see his pupils are reacting to light, so that's good too.
He's seen the situation with the half-removed pants and the water and everything. The plant is safe in the tub, it can remain there, but...]
Turn on your side and try to breathe for a minute.
( He hadn't tried to sit up, so he's happy to comply, only groaning when he attempts to turn onto his side. This is when he figures out he's probably caused some bruising. Egads, now he feels old, and he's only in his twenties. )
Slipped.
( he's still regaining the air in his lungs, though he no longer sounds strained when he speaks. )
Water splashed. After watering it. Your gift?
( Now he tries to sit up, ignoring what Lan Zhan had just said. )
[There's a firm hand on his shoulder pushing him back down. You're not getting up right away, Wei Ying.
One last look to confirm the plant is alright - a bit wet, but alright - and Wangji goes to pull off the wet socks off Wei Ying's feet, and, after a slight hesitation and with burning ears, the half removed pants off his legs. It's the first time he helps Wei Ying undress without him being drunk - okay, he's half knocked out, but still... not drunk.
And then he puts an arm around Wei Ying's shoulders and another under his legs and just lifts him up from the ground, carrying him out of the bathroom and to the living room and the couch, settling him down there.]
Don't move around. I'll be right back.
[He must have hit his head quite hard, because even though he doesn't appear to have a concussion, he has a sizeable bump. Wangji quickly dips into one of the bedrooms to grab a blanket, and then uses a dishtowel and the fridge's ice dispenser to make a makeshift ice pouch.
He brings both back to the couch, and starts by wrapping the blanket around Wei Ying, before going to feel the bump with his fingers and then applying the ice pouch to it.]
( Is it really listening when he's being pushed back down? Wei Wuxian doesn't fight it, at least, just buries his face in his hands as Lan Zhan strips off his socks, finishes stripping off his pants, and only takes them away again to yelp when he's picked up. What the heck?! )
So strong!
( He already knew this, but it's still surprising in the moment. Then he's settled on the couch and already trying to get off it when Lan Zhan's saying don't move around, so he...
... Resettles himself on the couch and holds his head, sighing. This is so stupid. He knows it's stupid. It doesn't start getting smarter when he's getting bundled up and Lan Zhan's holding an ice pouch to his head (though that does feel not horrible), because: )
Why would I have any of those?
( ................ don't you just ignore and suffer through pain? )
( They both suffer through pain because pain passes, they know that. And this is why they'd both end up in a hospital with appendicitis if left to their own devices, but that's neither here nor there. )
No, there's no need! No need for that, the cold's already helping.
( He thinks. He lifts a hand to where the cold pack is, twitching his lips into a placating sort of smile. Believe him. It's fine! He's sitting here in wet boxers and regretting life. It. Is. Fine. )
Lan Zhan, I'm not that accident prone, you know it. I'm not careless!
( Just flustered, dammit all! A problem not presently helped by Lan Zhan's continued proximity and the wet reminder of his sitting on the couch in a blanket and in his underwear.
What dignity does he have left... what believability... )
[Wangji, who has picked up Wei Ying more than one time, after a drunken tumble down some stairs, or has heard about an explosion happening in the engineering lab, is wisely going to choose not to dispute that statement.
Partly because it's not entirely false, Wei Ying isn't careless indeed, and yet, these things seem to keep happening around him for some reason. And he knows about the random scrapes and bruises and things like that.]
Keep the ice pouch out for a few minutes more, until the swelling has gone down. And then if you feel alright you should go change into dry clothes.
[Meanwhile he's going to go and... mop up that water in the bathroom and get the plant out of the bathtub.]
( His luck is both good and bad: bad, because these things keep happening, but good, because they generally aren't serious. The sad part is he generally tries to avoid the things which would lead toward accidents. He just gets found by them anyway.
He sits there in his blanket ball with the ice pack at his head and slowly... sinks... further... down. Once he can hear what Lan Zhan's doing with the moping and plant removal, he...
... slinks to the table, to take a bite of the now cold food. Which is still good, and he feels bad in a way he doesn't pin down well, before slinking down the hall and into his room, pulling off what he's wearing and tossing it haphazardly into the laundry bin he keeps, pulling on loose sweatpants and a shirt out of his dresser. Then, still slinking along like he's someone decided now he must make slow, quiet movements around the house, he searches for Lan Zhan, to q u i e t l y comment: )
[Wangji had just come back to the dining area to find Wei Ying not there and was folding the blanket, and he gives him a once over. No wobbling, he doesn't seem to be dizzy, he's moving around mostly okay, maybe a little stiffly where he banged his arm and shoulder. Wangji comes a little closer, fingers going into his hair to investigate the bump, which has swelled down. Good.]
I'll reheat it for you. Sit down.
[Well, that and his own. They're both cold by now.
Poor Wei Ying is now acting strangely subdued, too, even though Wangji is not much fazed by the happenings. It's just that usually, the happenings happen because Wei Ying is drunk, and he very much is not today, so it's a bit strange.]
( This date, which he's still not admitting to himself is a date, has gone horribly. He's managed to make Lan Zhan worry, added bruises to a growing collection he didn't actually care to add to, almost harmed the plant he still doesn't want to examine why he bought, then made Lan Zhan experience the cardinal sin of reheating freshly made food left to go cold on plate.
He sighs, resting his head on the table with no thump (extra pain right now, plus that'd make Lan Zhan worry, he hazards to guess) and his hands in his lap, listening to the sounds from the kitchen and wondering if he can crawl back into the blanket and pretend today--tonight--this moment isn't happening.
So tempting. He turns his head to the side to regard the direction of the couch and now folded blanket. So tempting. Instead, he stays where he sits, only lifting his head to sit properly once Lan Zhan returns. )
You really didn't need to do that...
( HE'S A MAN. HE CAN HANDLE A COLD MEAL though the hot meal served hot is definitely nicer... )

Wait, so what's the point of that?
